The blog of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Eye Level, has a nice recent tribute on the retirement of George Gurney, one of the foremost experts on American sculpture and most recently Acting Chief Curator at the Smithsonian. The Foundation is grateful to Dr. Gurney for organizing the 1996 exhibition Chaim Gross: A Celebration at the Smithsonian and which continues today as an online exhibit, with elegant writings about Chaim’s work and Gurney’s reflections on their first meeting. Gurney also conducted 21 interviews with sculptors in 1977-78 while working on his major 1979 exhibit Sculpture and the Federal Triangle that are now in the Archives of American Art. To Dr. Gurney, our gratitude!
